Laurel Park, NC - New Home Construction

A compact cottage designed for outdoor living, aging-in-place, and remaining in the neighborhood where she had deep roots

Some projects start with a dream. This one started with a crisis.

When Hurricane Helene sent trees through the roof of a Laurel Park home, it didn't just destroy a house. It upended a life. The homeowner had lived in her neighborhood for years, was deeply woven into its community, and had no interest in starting over somewhere else. She wanted to rebuild. Right there. On the same small lot where her neighbors had rallied around her in the aftermath of the storm.

The challenges were real. A very tight budget. A triangular third-acre lot with new city setback rules that left only 17% of the land buildable. Room needed for a septic field. A variance request that required presenting preliminary drawings to the city before a single design decision was finalized. We prepared carefully for that meeting, brought drawings that showed exactly what we intended to build, and kept the new home within the footprint of the old one. The city approved it.

Then we got to work on the design itself.

At 778 square feet of interior space, every decision had to earn its place. The home is a one-bedroom, one-bath cottage with an open living area — compact, but not cramped. Wide doorways, blocking for future grab bars, and minimal steps at the carport make it a home she can live in comfortably for decades. Strategic window placement brings natural light into every corner. And with 503 square feet of porches, a gardener who loves being outdoors has plenty of room to do just that.

The cottage feel was intentional. This is a historic neighborhood, and the new home fits into it the way the old one did — like it belongs there.

Throughout a process that was exhausting and emotionally heavy, the goal was always the same: make sure she felt heard, give practical and honest guidance, and stay steady when the road got hard. That's what a guide is for.

The result is a home she loves, in the neighborhood she never wanted to leave.

"Heather designed my new home following Helene's destruction. She addressed what was needed and then creatively added details to make it more functional and pleasing. I appreciated how she heard what was needed and desired. She gave helpful and practical advice, and she was tremendously supportive during a tumultuous time. In Heather you'll find a talented, professional designer who is kindhearted and personable. It was my good fortune to have her help." — Missy
