Bungalow Renovation 2
A family home reimagined
This Asheville house had deep roots. As a third-generation family home, it held sentimental value and a strong connection to the past but it no longer met the needs of its current owners. With only two bedrooms and one bathroom, structural issues in the floor, outdated mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, and a dark, cramped layout, the house was ready for a complete transformation. However, the homeowners loved the mountain views, large lot, central location, and the home’s unique character and history. These features became the foundation for a thoughtful renovation that respected the past while planning for the future.
The redesign began by reworking the layout to support modern living and aging in place. We created a spacious new primary suite with a large bathroom and walk-in closet. The main living spaces were opened up into a single, light-filled space oriented toward the mountain views. Slightly vaulted ceilings gave the rooms a greater sense of openness, especially important for the tall homeowner. A new screened porch provided an extension of the living spaces and a connection to the outdoors. A laundry room and an office that doubles as a guest room filled out the existing footprint. On the rear of the house we added a second office and a two-car garage with a two-bedroom guest suite above. This extra space allows them to host guests or provide space for live-in caregivers in the future.
Behind the walls, the house was completely modernized with all-new electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and insulation. Grading was adjusted to prevent future water intrusion, and structural repairs ensured the home was ready for another 100 years. On the exterior, new white Hardiboard lap siding with black trim and red accents (the homeowner’s favorite color) gave the home a fresh but timeless look.
Throughout the project, care was taken to preserve the character and history of the original home, blending old and new in a way that honors its past while preparing it for many more years of family life.
